I really like the twist of 3rd Birthday and the relationship between Aya and Eve. This COULD Have been perfect if it was done like...not bad. It would have also greatly benefited from being revealed mid-way through the game so we're not bamboozled into what we got for their characters. Then the game could have focused on explanation and fixing the butterfly effect shinaniganery to a outcome everyone wanted. Also probably not put this game on the PSP so you could make something feature length instead of crammed into a rough handheld. There was definitely an order-of-operations failure in story board, and of course their very poor focus on elements that just weren't the focus of the fanbase. Unfortunately, I doubt anyone would have the visional direction to bring the IP Back from the ashes of the dumpster fire that 3rd Birthday was.

Mortal shell plays like garbage though. Some of us play souls style games to enjoy polished responsive controls. Mortal Shell is not that. The studio made an admirable effort for such a new and small team, but failed at the most fundamental part of a good game. I believe far too many of those who like it are willing to put up with such poor controls for the rest of what the game offers, which seem amazing from what I've heard/seen.

This was a fantastic breakdown/documentary and i'm extremely happy to have found your channel. I do have one...criticism? though, in the lords of shadow section, as someone who doesn't really feel like its a "real" castlevania game (though i'm not fond of that wording specifically) I really don't like the way you framed the only way to have that opinion as to believe any future game would fail to meet the mark. 3d castlevania games are extremely unfun for me and it doesn't have anything that I enjoyed from either the classic games or the metroidvania style games. I wont claim that a 3d castlevania game couldn't be great fun for me, but I don't really enjoy those sorts of action games despite loving classic and SotN style castlevania. that being said I do appreciate your take on the game even though I largely feel as though the meaning of the complaint was misunderstood. thanks

Yes, in terms of gameplay and visuals it was phenomenal imho. The combat has a nice satisfying, crunchy feel to it and is perfectly complimented by the anime flair to it. I do enjoy how they really nailed using the powers you gain into not only the combat and a key to open certain doors, but were incorporated into actual brain teasers and well thought out platforming puzzles. That one were you time three versions of yourself pulling switches being just as memorable to me. There were plenty of puzzle rooms I'd come to, think I need a double jump or something else, and leave. Then coming back later after having used the other powers you get well before double jump and understanding their mechanics better, I'd get eureka moments knowing and kind of laughing when I found out I could have solved them much earlier when I had the power to solve it in my arsenal already when I found it in the first place. I agree about the story as well, if you don't look too closely at it, what with the PC actually being the true usurper's heir so he is the prince, one of the Immortals just disappearing, and the strange way that the vilkian is somewhat justified but still is jist evil because of being split kind of maybe? Yeah individually they're all cool ideas but there is no cohesiveness. Even the bit of character growth Sargon has about finding out what he is other than a mindless soldier wielding a blade feels like it just kind of happened while everything else just happened. Still if they could get some better writers in or hopefully took some notes from this I wouldn't mind seeing at least one follow up with this team. I beat the game once on normal difficulty just because I always do that for a first playthrough usually but I do plan on giving it another go on a harder custom difficulty. There were a couple bosses that wrecked me more than a few times before I could beat them but most went down in one or two tries. It is unfortunate though that most of the difficulty options come down to fairly binary changes like damage output for you and the enemy when a change in encounter variety is my preferred method of upping difficulty. Introducing harder mid game enemies in earlier stages, possibly progressing to harder enemies only seen in the late game of the hardest difficulty. All while changing what encounters you might be more familiar with, nothing too unfair but would test the skill of adaptability from players still fighting enemies they know just in a different configuration and from a higher leveled area than was previously. Great lengthy review! Like for many others it was your original PoP retrospective that was recommended to me, though it was well after it was uploaded. I have since enjoyed many of your other videos. You go into a depth that I think only a few others who do these game retrospectives go into as much. I appreciate all the work you put into making these.

I know it's a common complaint, and you're not the first to make it, but I have never understood the criticism of Metroid Prime's world layout, and, honestly, I could not possibly disagree more. Even as a young teen playing Prime for the first time on release I found it's pacing to be perfect. I quickly learned how to get from almost anywhere to almost anywhere else in only a few rooms and short trip through Magmoor. I never minded the backtracking because I found retraversing old rooms made them feel familiar and created attachment to the world, and I almost always had several side areas I wanted to check on anyway. I was also pretty much always a step ahead of the hint system in remembering where I needed to backtrack to and was already on my way there when the hint system chirped in. I didn't even mind the artifact hunt because I was so exhaustive in my exploration I had already found half of them by the time the game told me what they were. I can kinda understand the constant backtracking may not be for everyone and it may feel like more of a slog getting from place to place if that's how you see it, but I don't mind it at all and thought the map was laid out very efficiently for it. I actually got far more frustrated with Prime 2s map and all the places that are locked off or one way only, but for some reason everyone thinks it's an improvement over the first game, and I don't get that either. Prime 3 is actually the best in this regard as it's world are broken into bite sized chunks that the landing sites allow for fast travel, but I really missed the larger interconnected world in Prime 3, so I still prefer Prime 1. I also did not have any problem with the boss battles and consider them some of the best in the franchise, probably cause I was already used to this sort of pattern based boss battle from so many Zelda games. I was actually shocked to hear your criticism of them, but I kind'a get it and this comment had already gone long so I'll let it slide :D

An interesting example of "incompletion mystique": Xenosaga is a trilogy of JRPGs for the PS2 that was originally planned to be a six game epic that would take place in the same universe as Xenogears. Through a combination of budgetary constraints and executive meddling, the series was whittled down to three games, and the game's director and main writer -- that is, Tetsuya Takahashi and his wife, Soraya Saga -- were fired midway through the development of the second game. This resulted in the trilogy having a very strong first entry, a borderline incomplete second entry with tons of content cut from it, and a rushed third entry that attempted to wrap up four games' worth of story in one. And this is a series dealing with very complex intellectual topics, the sort of metaphysical navel gazing that was not too uncommon for a brief period in Japanese media. Suffice it to say, three games was not enough to handle the material, and the series was never truly considered "complete" by fans or its creators. I'd say the games have a cult following, one that hasn't been satisfied with Takahashi's later work on Xenoblade which, while more approachable and marketable -- and certainly more successful -- lacks the deep sense of mystery found in Xenosaga. I'm not sure if this is quite the type of series you'd do a video on, but I'd certainly watch it if you did.

tbh id argue that while the story itself might be great, its not exactly good video game storytelling. The narrative and the gameplay are entirely seperate and you could just take the story and make a movie out of it with no impact to the narrative. Not exactly a showcase for video games as a medium

Now I beat it on an emulator, and I didn't use save states but the emulator automatically holds your place so I never had to redo levels each play session. Do you reckon that still counts as beating it fair and square? And have you watched The Nerds new anniversary episode? It's a bit of an addendum on his old Castlevania reviews.
